    Biography

    Professor Shapiro is currently serving as the director of Liberal Studies and Interdisciplinary Programs, and director of the Italian program of the department of Comparative Literature and Foreign Languages. A graduate of Barnard College in French studies, with M.A. and Ph.D. degrees in European intellectual and cultural history from Columbia University, she teaches French language, civilization, and literature, and Italian civilization. She is pursuing research on the relationships between French and European artists and society and on urban studies in a European context. In the area of university service, she has been dedicated to promoting international student exchanges through the University of California's Education Abroad Program, for which she has served as Director of the Critical Studies Program in Paris (1982-84) and as Associate Director for Academic Affairs in the EAP universitywide administration (1992-96). Her most recent academic enthusiasm is the study of Fancophone (especially non-European) cultures and literatures.
