    Biography

Lucille Chia received her B.A. from the University of Pennsylvania, and her Ph.D. in Chinese history from Columbia University. Her current research includes studies on the role of books and publishing in late imperial China, a topic partly inspired by work on the social history of the book being done for Europe and the U.S. and the possibilities for comparisons. A future research project concerns the early history of Chinese migration to various parts of southeast Asia, especially the Philippines, and the socioeconomic impact of this diaspora on coastal regions of China from which the emigrants came. Finally, yet another of her research interests deals with the development of science and technology, such as how handicraft techniques were transmitted and modified from place to place, and the ways by which the uses of pharmaceutical materials were developed and refined.
