    Morse, Joseph G

    Professor of Entomology

College of Natural and Agricultural Sciences
    Entomology

    Biography

Research Specialization - My program covers both applied and fundamental research dealing with management of pests of subtropical crops, especially pests of citrus such as citrus thrips, Asian citrus psyllid, bean thrips, Fuller rose beetle, and various soft and armored scales, and pests of avocado such as avocado thrips, persea mite, and armored scales. I have an interest in integrated pest management, biological control, parasitoid biology and behavior, insectary rearing of natural enemies, the acute and sub-lethal impact of pesticides on both target pests and non-target organisms, modeling and computer simulation, pesticide resistance, and the management of invasive species. Over the past twenty years, my lab has contributed to the evolution of citrus and avocado pest management in California towards a more integrated approach emphasizing increased monitoring activity, use of economic thresholds and selective pesticides, conservation and augmentation of predators and parasitoids, and post-harvest disinfestation of fruit. I work closely with a number of citrus growers, pest control advisors, University extension agents, and researchers in other Departments on campus in order that our applied research efforts will have applicability to field pest management efforts. I have an interest in international agriculture and have been involved in citrus pest management projects and with researchers in Arizona, Florida, Hawaii, Texas, Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Chile, Cyprus, Egypt, Israel, Japan, Mexico, New Zealand, South Africa, and Spain, and in a 1996 FAO-sponsored analysis of citrus integrated pest management in 13 countries of the Near East. I have worked with the UC Statewide IPM Program (6 years as Associate Director), UC Center for Invasive Species Research (3 years as Director), and with UC's Division of Agriculture and Natural Resources (6 years as Program Leader for Agricultural Policy & Pest Management). I teach a course in Introductory Entomology (Ent 10) and the Evolution section of Introductory Evolution and Ecology (Bio 5C) and enjoy graduate student instruction and interaction (7 M.S. and 8 Ph.D. students have been awarded their degree under my supervision; I currently have 3 Ph.D. students in my lab).
