    Research Area

    Research in my laboratory is concerned with the study of the basic developmental biology of mucosal immune tissue, CD4 T cell homeostatic regulation, and the role of relB in the regulation of NF-kappaB activity and cellular differentiation. One of our major projects is on the development and function of M cells, which are a specialized subset of epithelial cells associated with mucosal immune tissues. These cells are responsible for the surveillance of the airway and intestine, by performing a selective sampling of particles from the lumen. We are working to use this system to develop a needle-free vaccine delivery technology that may be conveniently and cheaply applied to vaccination against infectious agents such as influenza. A second major project is focused on the role of the chemokine receptor CCR7 in the regulation of CD4 T cell survival and differentiation. Our studies have suggested that CCR7 ligands regulate not only lymphocyte migration, but also their survival and development into effector cells.
