    Research Area

Research conducted in the Holt laboratory focuses on population and physiological ecology of weedy and invasive plant species in wildlands and agricultural ecosystems and the application of that knowledge to management. We are investigating the population ecology of the grassland invader, Cynara cardunculus (artichoke thistle) and the mechanisms by which it invades coastal grassland ecosystems. We are also exploring phenological modeling approaches for developing management strategies for this species. A second major research project focuses on invasion of riparian habitats by Arundo donax (giant reed). Our work focuses on the habitat factors that promote invasion and replacement of native species by A. donax and the impacts of this species on native communities. We are also addressing methods of A. donax removal and restoration of native riparian species that prevent reinvasion. A new project focuses on the invasion of Brassica tournefortii, Sahara mustard, into southwest deserts.
